'Madame Butterfly' — dual Olympic gold medallist, eight-time Olympic medallist and Sport Australia Legend
Susie O'Neill OAM is one of Australia's most successful swimmers, earning the nickname 'Madame Butterfly'. She won eight Olympic medals in all, two of them gold — the 200m butterfly at the 1996 Games and the 200m freestyle in 2000. Only Emma McKeon, Ian Thorpe and Leisel Jones have won more Olympic medals for Australia. In a nation that measures itself by its swimmers, hers is a name that still carries enormous weight.
The recognition that followed her career confirms her standing. In 1997 she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for service to sport. In 2002 she was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, and in 2012 she was elevated to become the Hall of Fame's 34th Legend of Australian Sport — an honour reserved for the most significant figures in the country's sporting history. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2018.
Audiences hear from a genuine Australian sporting legend whose record speaks plainly: two Olympic titles, eight Olympic medals, and a place among the nation's official Legends of sport. Her perspective on swimming and Olympic achievement comes from the very top of the podium. For sporting events, awards nights and corporate functions seeking a speaker with instant name recognition and unimpeachable credibility, Susie O'Neill brings the rarest commodity of all — a story every Australian already knows part of, told by the person who lived it.
