177-game Adelaide Crows AFL player and former Head of Football, now a wellbeing and leadership facilitator
Brett Burton played 177 AFL games across 12 seasons with the Adelaide Crows, serving as AFL Players Association President and Laws of the Game Committee member during his playing career. He holds an Honours degree in Applied Science (Human Movement) completed during that time. After retiring, he spent a decade in senior leadership — as High Performance Manager at the Brisbane Lions and then Head of Football at the Adelaide Crows — before moving into speaking, facilitation and high-performance mentoring.
Burton's distinctive angle is the concept he calls Wellbeing Ability: our capacity to take meaningful action to care for our wellbeing using knowledge, skills and strategies that allow us to navigate life and thrive. This is not generic wellness messaging. It is grounded in the latest research in neuroscience, positive psychology and leadership — and in the specific, public pressure of elite sport. His own experience of leading the Adelaide Crows to the 2017 AFL Grand Final, enduring two difficult seasons that followed, and then being sacked after a publicised review process gives him a personal story of adversity that is frank, relatable and instructive.
Burton is well suited to leadership conferences, wellbeing and professional development events, and sporting organisations. His combination of elite sporting credibility, post-career corporate leadership experience and applied research makes him a grounded and credible voice for audiences who need more than inspiration — they need a workable framework.
