Daniel Kowalski OAM

Four-time Olympic medallist and Head of Olympian Services at the AOC — athlete wellbeing and inclusion.

About Daniel

Daniel Kowalski OAM won four Olympic medals across two Games. At Atlanta in 1996 he took silver in the 1500m freestyle and bronze in both the 400m and the 200m freestyle — the first man in 92 years to win medals in all three freestyle distances. At Sydney 2000 he swam in the heat of the 4x200m freestyle relay and shares the gold. He retired from competition in 2002. The contribution that has mattered most since is a different one: in April 2010 Kowalski came out publicly as gay, at a time when the sporting culture made that a genuinely difficult thing to do.

His decision was not a moment — it was a process, and one that cost him enough that he understands the weight of what other athletes in similar positions are carrying. That understanding has shaped the work he does now as Head of Olympian Services at the Australian Olympic Committee, where athlete wellbeing, diversity and cultural change sit at the centre of the role. He has addressed the United Nations on behalf of Olympians and is an ambassador for The Pinnacle Foundation. He brings to those conversations not just the credibility of an Olympian but the specific credibility of someone who has navigated the intersection of elite performance culture and personal identity — two worlds that have not always made space for each other.

For sporting organisations, corporate LGBTQ+ programs, diversity and inclusion conferences and leadership events, Daniel Kowalski speaks with a directness and personal authority that is rare in this space, and he works as a master of ceremonies for clients including American Express, Westpac, National Australia Bank, the Commonwealth Bank and Beyond Blue. His story is not a lesson in overcoming adversity in the abstract — it is a precise account of what belonging, silence and courage look like inside high-performance environments. Audiences leave with a clearer sense of what genuine inclusion requires.
