2020 Australian of the Year | Eye surgeon, humanitarian, and founder of Sight For All
Dr James Muecke AM is the 2020 Australian of the Year — an honour that recognised a career spent at the intersection of medicine, humanitarianism, and social enterprise. He graduated with Honours from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 1987 and went on to work as a doctor in Africa and an eye surgeon in the Middle East before founding Sight For All in 2008, an organisation dedicated to eliminating blindness in Aboriginal communities across Australia and in some of the poorest countries of Asia and Africa.
What sets James apart is the sheer breadth of what he has built and endured. His work has earned him a Member of the Order of Australia (2012), the Australian Medical Association's President's Leadership Award (2013), and Ernst & Young's Social Entrepreneur for Australia (2015). He has also become one of Australia's most compelling voices on type 2 diabetes — now recognised as a leading cause of adult blindness — speaking with evidence and conviction about what he calls a looming catastrophe for our health system, a disease affecting nearly one in ten Australians. A neurological condition that ended his surgical career has not slowed him; he has redirected that energy into documentary filmmaking.

We asked James to inspire our groups with a presentation and discussion on social entrepreneurship. Although all of our members come from a business background, the topic was relevant and engaging. James spent the afternoon with our members and provided a forum for people to think outside of their own business and how they can make an impact within and outside of their own communities, whether they be business or personal. James is an experienced and engaging speaker and importantly provides a message that is needed across society as a whole. Inspiration is one thing but to provide a message that motivates is so much better.
