Australia's 26th Governor-General, former Chief of the Defence Force, INTERFET commander and Military Cross recipient.
General The Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK AC(Mil) CVO MC is one of the most decorated and respected figures in Australia's modern history. He served as Australia's 26th Governor-General from 2014 to 2019, and before that as Chief of the Defence Force — the most senior military role in the country. His operational record includes command of INTERFET, the international peacekeeping force deployed to East Timor in 1999 during one of the most complex and politically sensitive missions in Australia's post-war history. He was awarded the Military Cross for his service in Vietnam. He is a Knight of the Order of Australia.
Cosgrove's leadership story is not built on theory. It was forged across decades of military service that demanded genuine decision-making under pressure — in the field, in crisis, and at the most senior levels of government and diplomacy. The East Timor mission in particular stands as a defining example of how measured leadership, clear communication and a calm under fire can shape an outcome that a whole nation watches. He led that mission at a moment when the world was paying attention, and the result reflected the quality of the leadership.
For leadership conferences, corporate retreats, defence and government forums, and major gala dinners, Sir Peter Cosgrove brings a quality that is genuinely rare on the speaking circuit: the credibility of someone who has led at the highest level, in the hardest circumstances, with the weight of national consequence behind every decision. Audiences leave with a richer understanding of what leadership actually looks like when it matters most.
