Paralympic triathlete and cancer survivor who speaks with unflinching honesty about resilience and mental health
Liam Twomey was diagnosed with cancer at age seven and had his right leg amputated — a moment that shaped everything that followed. Behind the brave face were years of grief, anger and self-destruction as he struggled to accept who he was. At 21, a sliding door moment saved his life and he found sport, purpose and a reason to keep moving forward. He represented Australia as a Paralympic triathlete at the Paris Paralympic Games, with a 6th place finish at the 2023 World Para Triathlon Championships among his career highlights.
Twomey's value on stage is his refusal to smooth the story. He combines an academic background in psychology with lived experience of mental illness, disability and elite sport, and uses that combination to deliver practical, evidence-based strategies for mental fitness and personal resilience. He is an ambassador for the Dylan Alcott Foundation and the Black Dog Institute, has presented to school students through the Australian Institute of Sport and Victorian Institute of Sport since 2020, and is regarded as one of Australia's most utilised athletes in education and community engagement. His upcoming film, Play Dead, is set for release on Netflix in 2026.
Audiences describe Liam as having them laughing one moment and deeply reflective the next. Organisations from the Federal Court of Australia to Cenitex, S&C Electric and the Department of Justice have used him for conferences, team offsites and Mental Health Week events. He is a powerful choice for any event where the brief calls for genuine connection and a message that outlasts the room.
