Royal Australian Navy's first female pilot — on safety culture, decision-making and leading under pressure.
Natalee Johnston is a former Royal Australian Navy helicopter pilot who retired at the rank of Lieutenant Commander after a 24-year Navy career. She was the Navy's first female pilot, instructor, flight commander and executive officer, and for eight years the first and only female helicopter pilot in the RAN. Across that career she built working expertise in risk management, organisational culture and human factors, and trained as an accident investigator.
Her work now sits in safety. Johnston has worked with organisations on developing safety management systems, safety officer training and improving their understanding of risk and culture. She speaks on how safety and organisational culture interconnect and on the indicators that show when they are failing; on resilience and perseverance, drawn from her own path into the cockpit against people who believed she would not succeed; and on the soft skills and decision-making that shape behaviour, leadership, communication and safety outcomes.
