The engineer who promised 41 men would come home — and delivered
Professor Arnold Dix is a barrister, geologist, and underground disaster specialist who became the unlikely face of one of the most watched rescue operations in modern history. In late 2023, he was contacted directly by the Chief Engineer of India and the Secretary for India's Prime Minister to lead the rescue of 41 workers trapped inside the collapsed Silkyara-Bardot Tunnel in northern India. He dropped everything, flew to the site, and made a public promise: every one of those men would come home safely. Seventeen days later, he delivered. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese rose in parliament to acknowledge what he called 'an extraordinary story' — that 41 people were 'alive, safe and free' because of Dix's work alongside the Indian authorities.
Dix is currently President of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association — the peak advisory body to the United Nations on all matters underground. He holds membership of the British Institute of Investigators, sits at the Victorian Bar, and is a Visiting Professor of Engineering (Tunnels) at Tokyo City University. He operates across all continents and is an internationally recognised authority in fire and life safety, underground collapses, and the adaptive potential of subsurface environments. His conviction is that the underground offers resilient solutions to many of the most pressing challenges facing humanity — and he advocates for that future with, as he puts it, 'a smile on his face and an ethical eye.'
For event organisers seeking a speaker whose story carries genuine weight, Professor Dix delivers something rare: a first-person account of crisis leadership under extreme conditions, told by a man who held his nerve when 41 lives depended on it. His sessions on leadership in crisis, teamwork, and the power of perseverance resonate equally with corporate audiences, safety professionals, and broader conference crowds. He speaks from the tunnel face, not from a textbook — and audiences feel the difference.

This is a highly charged emotional rollercoaster of a story as the lives of 41 men hung in the balance, all hinging on the promise by an Australian Engineer that 41 men will be brought home safely.
How bringing people together can make the impossible possible. When working as a team is crucial to a positive outcome, what does it take to manage the emotions, fears, impulses and decisions of team members.
The crucial element for success.
But how do you combine Communication, Problem solving, Risk assessment and Decisive Action into a winning formula.
It’s time the good people of the world claim the future for all peoples and our planet. The Silkyara rescue demonstrates that almost anything is possible when we unite and be nice.’
I rise to acknowledge a truly great Australian, Professor Arnold Dix, and for what he has done in once again improving the relations between Australia and our great friends in India. Today, because of him and his hard work alongside the Indian authorities, 41 people are alive, safe and free. This is an extraordinary story.
