President of World Athletics, double Olympic 1500m champion and chair of London 2012
Sebastian Coe is a former track and field Olympic athlete hailed by many as Britain's greatest ever sportsperson. He won gold in the 1500m at both the 1980 Moscow and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and silver in the 800m at each of those Games — four Olympic medals in all, and he remains the only man to win successive Olympic 1500m titles. He later served as Member of Parliament for Falmouth and Camborne from 1992 to 1997 and was given a life peerage in 2000.
What distinguishes Coe is that his second career has been as consequential as his first. He chaired the latter phase of London's bid for the 2012 Games and then chaired the London Organising Committee from 2008 to 2012 — one of the most ambitious sporting projects of the modern era. He chaired the British Olympic Association from 2012 to 2016, has been President of World Athletics since 2015, re-elected unopposed in 2023 for a third and final term, and has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2020. Few people have shaped elite sport from both sides: as the athlete standing on the podium, and as the administrator responsible for delivering the event itself.
Audiences hear from someone who understands dedication to success at every level — the discipline of the individual athlete, the lessons of the Olympic legends, and the politics of sport at the highest tiers of international administration. His perspective on pressure is correspondingly distinctive; one of his signature topics argues that all pressure is self inflicted. For major conferences, leadership events and sporting occasions that call for genuine stature, Coe brings a combination very few speakers can offer: Olympic achievement and decades of authority over how global sport is run.
