Cultural anthropologist, AI pioneer and former ANU Vice-Chancellor
Professor Genevieve Bell AO is one of the world's most recognised authorities on the intersection of technology, culture and human behaviour. A cultural anthropologist by training, she spent nearly two decades at Intel, joining in 1998, founding the company's first User Experience Group in 2005 and going on to direct its User Experience Research group. She was made an Intel Fellow in 2008, a Vice President in 2014 and a Senior Fellow in 2016. Her work there helped shape some of the most influential consumer technology of the modern era by placing human experience at the centre of innovation.
In 2017 she returned to Australia to establish the 3A Institute — Autonomy, Agency and Assurance — co-founded by the Australian National University and CSIRO's Data61, serving as its inaugural director. She became a Distinguished Professor in the ANU College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics, was the inaugural Director of the ANU School of Cybernetics from 2021 to the end of 2023, and served as Vice-Chancellor of the ANU from January 2024 until September 2025.
Genevieve has advised governments, Fortune 500 companies and international bodies on AI governance, digital ethics and technology policy. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2020 Australia Day Honours for distinguished service to education, particularly to the social sciences and cultural anthropology. She brings rare depth — and genuine warmth — to the biggest questions facing organisations in the age of artificial intelligence, and suits board briefings, technology summits and leadership forums where those questions are strategic rather than technical.
Professor Genevieve Bell AO is a keynote speaker based in Australian Capital Territory who speaks on artificial intelligence, innovation and leadership. Book through Executive Speakers Australia.
