Founder and CEO of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre — on purpose, advocacy and movement-building.
Kon Karapanagiotidis founded the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Melbourne in 2001 with no staff, no funding and a borrowed office. Over the following two decades he built it into the largest independent human rights organisation in Australia, employing hundreds of people and supporting tens of thousands of people seeking asylum. The story of how that happened — and what he believes it teaches about purpose and persistence — is at the heart of his corporate speaking.
Kon is a lawyer, social worker, teacher and author, and his perspective on leadership is shaped by all of those disciplines. He speaks frankly about burnout, about the difficulty of sustaining work that runs into political headwinds, and about the kind of internal culture required to keep a mission-led organisation effective over the long term.
For corporate audiences, Kon is a strong fit for leadership programs, DE&I events, purpose-focused offsites and any audience whose work touches on social licence and social impact. His keynotes are warm, direct and practical, and they consistently shift how attendees think about what their own organisations could stand for.

I just wanted to thank you again for your beautiful piece on Saturday night. I just listened to it on the website so can now appreciate why everyone was raving about it. You really thought about the topic and it felt not only thoughtful, but personal. The video of your talk at our Gala a couple of weeks ago has gotten an incredibly strong and positive reaction from our audience. Our web team were wondering if you would mind if they transcribed your speech from the video and turned it into an article on our web site?Programming Manager, The Wheeler Centre
