Futurist who co-led Shell's Technology Futures programme and co-founded Future Agenda — strategic foresight for boards.
Roger Dennis co-led Shell's Technology Futures programme in The Hague and provided key input into the Shell Scenarios — foresight work widely regarded as among the most sophisticated ever developed inside a private organisation. He is also a co-founder of Future Agenda, the world's largest foresight programme. He now works from New Zealand as a futurist and strategic advisor, helping boards and chief executives navigate the forces reshaping the world, and consulting with organisations globally on how to build genuine foresight capability rather than perform the motions of it.
Dennis's point of difference is that he is deeply sceptical of the way most organisations approach strategy and planning. His central argument — that forming strategy without engaging seriously with the future is structurally incoherent — is not a provocation for its own sake. It is the conclusion of someone who has watched what happens when organisations conflate forecasting with planning and mistake certainty for rigour. His work sits at the intersections of geopolitics, climate change, technology, supply chains, cyber security and democracy, and he is known for an ability to get "above strategy". He does not sell optimism. He sells clarity.
He suits senior leadership offsites, strategy and planning conferences, and events in industries facing structural disruption, where the audience is serious about getting the future right rather than just acknowledging that it is uncertain. Audiences working through strategy cycles, scenario planning or major capital allocation decisions will find his sessions both intellectually demanding and practically valuable. He is the kind of speaker who changes how people think, not just what they think about.
