Astrophysicist, data scientist, and Australian Survivor contestant — now applying AI to decarbonise the energy grid.
Samuel Hinton is an award-winning astrophysicist, data scientist, and software engineer who holds a Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Science (Honours) and is completing a PhD in astrophysics. He is currently working as a data science lead in renewable energy, applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to the challenge of decarbonising the energy grid. He was an Australian representative at the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, has published more than 200 scientific articles, and has also written three novels. A contestant on Australian Survivor: Champions v Contenders, he has appeared on Thinkinc, FameLab, Physics in the Pub, and Pint of Science.
What makes Hinton unusual is the breadth of what he does well. He is a working scientist tackling a critical real-world problem in energy transition, a science communicator who can hold a general audience's attention, and someone who has been willing to be publicly ridiculous — on national television — while maintaining genuine credibility in his field. That combination is rare and gives his communication work a warmth and self-awareness that pure academics rarely achieve.
Hinton is well suited to science communication events, innovation conferences, sustainability forums, and any occasion where an audience needs to grapple with complex technical ideas — particularly around AI, energy, and climate — and leave feeling informed rather than talked at. His sessions work best where there is space for genuine intellectual engagement.
Samuel Hinton is a keynote speaker based in New South Wales who speaks on education, innovation and technology. Book through Executive Speakers Australia.
Some problems are so monumental that it seems like pursuit of them must lead to inevitable failure. From tackling unsolved mysteries like the nature of dark energy to the brutal cut-throat game of Survivor, Samuel thrives on approaching these challenges. Samuel presents his methods for overcoming such challenges and how to come out the end more confident, and more enthusiastic for the next challenge
In a world of inequality and hardship, the search for meaning has never been more prominent. And there is nothing like studying the vast magnitude of the Universe to realise the insignificance of the small corner of the cosmos we call home. In an unexpected twist, Samuel explains the freedom that comes with cosmic indifference and how embracing hard truths allows us to reach our full potential and live the most satisfying and meaningful lives we can.
Unfortunately for Samuel's stress levels, the world is filled with it, with an increasing amount gaining traction in the general population every day. Learn how to sift through the mountains of false claims and tactics encountered every day to detect bullshit and pseudoscience from far off, and avoid it like the plague! And then learn the top tricks of persuaders and marketers, designed to encourage your compliance and convince you despite your best efforts, so that you don't come out second best!
