Former Premier of Tasmania — leadership through crisis, renewable energy transition and what government can teach business.
The Honourable Peter Gutwein GAICD served as Premier of Tasmania from 2020 to 2022, leading the state through the most challenging period in a generation. His tenure included managing the economic, social and health dimensions of the pandemic while simultaneously pursuing an ambitious agenda on renewable energy, infrastructure and economic development. Before becoming Premier, he served as Treasurer and held a range of senior ministerial portfolios over more than a decade in government.
Since leaving office, Gutwein has brought his experience in public leadership to the speaker's stage, offering organisations an inside perspective on how significant change is planned, driven and sustained at the highest levels of government. His topics span the practical dimensions of leadership — setting goals, managing competing stakeholders, overcoming institutional resistance — as well as the policy areas he is most closely associated with: energy transition, circular economy and the relationship between economic growth and community wellbeing.
For business, government and sustainability audiences, Peter Gutwein offers the kind of frank, experienced perspective that only comes from having actually done the job. His talks are grounded in the realities of leading through crisis and complexity, and he speaks with the candour of someone who has stepped away from the political arena and can now reflect honestly on what worked, what didn't, and what other leaders can learn from it.
